Upon investigation, Harvey discovers that the house's creator, Mr. Harvey eventually starts to suspect that the house is not as perfect as it seems. Harvey returns to his normal form, and goes to his room. However, when Jive and Marr encourage him to kill Wendell, Harvey disappoints them by leaving him. During Halloween, Harvey terrifies Wendell. Marr asks him what he wants to be for Halloween, and when he answers a vampire, Marr uses her hairy hands to carve Harvey’s face and body into a Vampire with fangs and wings. Jive takes Harvey up to the roof and Harvey meets Marr (the sister of Rictus and Jive). They get along well and he suggests he get his revenge on Wendell for scaring him. One evening, as Harvey prepares for Halloween, he meets Jive, the brother of Rictus. Harvey also becomes friends with Lulu, a shy girl who has been staying at the Holiday House for several months and seems to be harbouring a secret. Harvey vows to get Wendell back for scaring him. While out, Wendell scares Harvey by tiring a noose on a scarecrow (due to Wendell dressing up as a Hangman). They get their masks from the attic, and wear costumes that belong to previous children who stayed at the Holiday House. They start hanging out lots and (as Halloween is every single evening) they go out. Harvey quickly befriends Wendell, another boy staying at the Holiday House. Though Mrs Griffen is nice, she seems to be hiding a secret. She owns three cats: Stew Cat (called that because of his appetite), Blue Cat (called that because of his blue fur) and Clue Cat (called that because his tail sticks up and twists like a question mark). They manage to walk through a strange wall surrounded by mist, and once through, Harvey is greeted by an elderly woman, Mrs Griffen. Harvey reluctantly follows Rictus to the house. While walking to school one week after meeting Rictus, Harvey is found by Rictus, who tells him there is a room for him to stay in.
Harvey doesn’t mention Rictus to his parents. Rictus promises to try and book Harvey in to stay, and leaves. At the Holiday House, all four seasons happen in one day, Spring in the morning, Summer in the afternoon, Autumn in the evening and Winter at night, meaning that Halloween and Christmas is every night. He explains to Harvey about a kid's paradise, the Holiday House. Rictus tells him that he can fly and flew in through the window. As Harvey closes the window, he finds a strange man in his bedroom. One day, more bored than ever, a gust of wind opens Harvey’s bedroom window. During Half Term in February, the weather is cold and rainy. Harvey is bored with school, teachers, homework and his day-to-day life. The Thief of Always starts out by introducing Harvey Swick.
